Founded in 1993, Norwegian is a low-cost airline. From its full name, it is based in the suburbs of Oslo. Initially intended to offer domestic flights, it carried 500,000 passengers in 1999. In 2006, the company opened its first base abroad in Warsaw and then expanded rapidly. In 2008, it is the turn of the Copenhagen airport. Its rapid development led in 2015 to issue more than 26 million air tickets. Known for its low-priced flights, the company is also for having passed the largest order in the history of European aviation: 122 Boeing 737 and 100 Airbus A320. It is also the first to offer free WIFI on board its flights in Europe and the following year to offer video on demand. Norwegian has been voted best low-cost airline for several years in a row. In 2015, it becomes the company consuming the least fuel. Today, it serves 9 French airports and offers 81 destinations mainly in Europe, but also to the United States, North Africa, and the Middle East. The company makes a point of honor to offer a quality service and is at the forefront of new technologies. Since 2022, it has been developing flights to the United States and Asia. With a goal of flying Airbus, it unveiled the A321 Neo.  The novelty of this aircraft is that it can cover both medium and long-haul flights and allow passengers to benefit from unbeatable prices. It has already positioned itself on these Boeings which should see the light at the end of 2022. This low-cost airline is already strengthening its spring-summer flight program to the United States, including flights between London and Chicago or Los Angeles. The flight specialist's liaison between the London-Gatwick base and Chicago O'Hare airport will be there as the four flights by week initially programmed. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operated by Long Haul can accommodate 35 passengers in Premium class and 309 in Economy.  The low cost already serves Los Angeles from six cities (plus Rome from November), including from Paris and London-Gatwick. In the latter case, it will spend 7 to 9 rotations weekly, additional flights taking off Friday and Sunday.  It is already flying from Gatwick to Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York-JFK and Oakland, and will be launching flights to Denver and Seattle in September. In the US, it now has 15 destinations: Chicago and Los Angeles, plus Austin, Boston, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Hartford, Las Vegas, New York-JFK, Newark, Newburgh, Oakland, Orlando, Providence, and Seattle.  In January 2022, the company recorded a record 33 million passengers, an increase of + 13%.  Looking for a discount on next flight? Air Norwegian is a Norwegian airline company founded in 1993. The company has its main hub in Oslo and operates from the airports of Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim, Stockholm, Rygge, Karstrup and Warsaw. With a fleet of 44 aircraft serving 84 destinations, it is the second Scandinavian airline after SAS. In 2008 Norwegian transported more than 9 million passengers.

Last year, the airline Norwegian made headlines. The company announced the opening of a line between Edinburgh and New York. This is an attractive option for European travelers, already familiar with low-cost pricing. This is an opportunity to get back to the Norwegian company and quickly explain its history and current strategy. Far from existing since last week, it also participated in the emergence of the low-cost model. This article goes beyond the brief relaying the opening of a line and undertakes a more global presentation of this low-cost airline. Did you find your voucher code?

The beginnings of Norwegian Air Shuttle

Without being strictly speaking a former national company having been privatized, Air Norwegian began its history in 1993, as a regional airline. The name at the time was Norwegian Air Shuttle (NAS). The airline takes advantage of this alliance and operates between the capital, Oslo, and the coastal cities of the western part of the country. At the time, its fleet of aircraft is made up of Fokker 50, economically-engineered Dutch airplanes with turboprops (using propellers).

Modernization and reinvention of the model from 2002

To re-situate the context, the period is very difficult in the world of airlines: September 11, 2001, is in everyone's minds, rising oil prices do not help.  These times of uncertainty do not prevent the Norwegian company from reflecting on its future. It was during this period that renewal took place. On September 1, 2002, Norwegian Air Shuttle was changed to Air Norwegian. This is when it adopts low-cost codes. Norwegian repositioned itself on the most popular regional routes and differentiated by offering lower rates than its competitors. Avail free discount codes here.

History repeats after 2012

The year 2012 marks the time for a new change in the corporation. It announces the opening of a new base at Gatwick airport in London, United Kingdom. Without going into details, the company then acquired 22 Boeing 737-800, 100 Boeing 737MAX and 100 Airbus A320NEO. These models are known to reduce fuel consumption, something of great importance for the Norwegian business model.

The next, heading to the US using the new Dreamliner

Well-built from several bases in Europe, after those opened in London and several in Spain, the company undertakes to conquer longer lines from London-Gatwick. Norwegian then begins to serve the United States, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico using these Boeing Dreamliner. It now operates in 27 European countries and flies to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Some of these destinations are only operated during the summer, especially around the Mediterranean basin.

By the end of 2022, Norwegian will receive 65 new aircraft, which will only reinforce the image of a fleet. The goal is to always operate the most fuel-efficient aircraft and configure cabins with more seats than its competitors. Have you booked your flight yet? Click for best promo code available.
