DFDS was founded in 1866, when C.F Tietgen unified the three largest Danish steamboat companies. Since its inception, DFDS has been an integral part of Denmark's industrial and maritime history. The company has been involved in both domestic and international trade, transporting both passengers and goods. The international activities began in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea followed later by the Mediterranean. Towards the end of the 19th century, journeys to the United States and South America were also established.
Land transport and logistics have also become part of DFDS 'professional activity as overland freight transport began to develop, and in the 1960s the company launched a door-to-door the freight. The largest investments were in the Swedish passenger and freight forwarding company Tor Line in the early 1980s. In 2001, The Lithuanian Freight Transport Company LISCO and the Norwegian freight carrier Lys-Line in 2003. In 2007, a new management team was appointed and a new growth strategy adopted. DFDS Seaways works with a network of 25 routes and 55 vessels in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and the English Channel. It provides solutions division of logistics in most European countries.
The Jubilee Seaways ferry Lego model is the largest ship ever built with parts from the famous Danish games manufacturer. More than a million bricks were needed to build it.
